We give you a few tips for placing safety pictograms properly and safely.
Provide the information where it is needed
Thoroughly analyse the workplace and the activities that take place there. This allows you to determine at which locations it is important that an employee sees the sign.
Make sure the sign is legible
Use the following formula for this: sign surface in m² > distance²/2000 (metre).
Take the visibility of the sign into account
In the case of poorer lighting conditions, always provide extra lighting or illuminated safety signs.
Certain pictograms must remain visible in any case during a power failure (escape routes, rescue equipment, fire-fighting equipment…).
Also always close off the site/workplace properly after the day's work. Use fences, chain, lock, etc. This way you rule out any legal consequences and vandalism.
Check for soiling or wear
Maintain or replace soiled or worn safety signage in good time.
Choose the right material
Safety pictograms are made in many different materials (aluminium, polypropylene sheet, polyester…). Not every material is equally resistant to high or low temperatures, weather conditions, chemicals… Choose the right material for each situation.
Training
On a safe workplace or site, safety pictograms cannot be missing: they point out possible dangers to those present. In each of our training courses, such dangerous situations, and the associated safety signage, are also covered. For more information about a tailor-made training course, contact Praxis:
