Sitting or standing? What is healthiest?

Zitten of staan? Wat is het gezondst?

But is standing really healthier than sitting?

Just as harmful

According to movement scientist Jan Seghers, standing for a long time is just as harmful as sitting.

"We really have to learn to move at the office. Preferably every half hour."

Standing still for a long time or sitting still for a long time is actually the same mechanism. In both cases our body uses very little energy. At a desk, our body simply comes to a standstill.

According to the WHO, an inactive lifestyle – less than half an hour of exercise a day – causes 3.2 million deaths a year. That makes it the fourth most important cause of death in the world.

But how do you break that lifestyle with an office job?

"Try to prevent your body from going into sleep mode."

You do that by moving a little every 30 to 45 minutes. Taking the stairs, getting water, walking around the block.

Standing up for a moment is not enough. To get your engine going, it's best to keep at it for two to five minutes.
